Die Schnabeltiere Loop Session

29 07 2009

Just stumbled upon this: “Die Schnabeltiere” with a Traktor loop session featuring my track Trans Lunar Injection (from the album Beyond The Moon) - sound quality is not the best but interesting nevertheless. Karl surely knows his Traktor. :-)

Three quick netaudio tips

12 02 2008

Here’s three short-spoken download recommendations:

  1. Dark Hall is a fusion jazz side project with metal bass virtuoso Steve DiGiorgio. There’s only five songs from a 1998 demo for download on their site but they all are awesome, and Steve’s bass work is really amazing.
  2. Downliners Sekt just releases their second full-length album. Pretty dark, trip-hopish rock instrumentals that sometimes remind me of Russian Circles, pretty progressive, well produced, and worth a download.
  3. Philip Wilkerson offers several downloads on his website, he calls it “spacious and contemplative soundscapes” which pretty much sums it up. I especially liked his piano improvisations.

Tata. :-)

Cakewalk Sonar videos

15 12 2007

As one of the few loyal Sonar users left here in Germany (it seems everyone else uses Logic, Cubase or Live these days) I almost feel obliged to promote it from time to time. So, here’s a bunch of Sonar videos featured on Cakewalks MySpace-blog:

Karl-Heinz Stockhausen is dead

8 12 2007

Sad news: the ingenious german composer and godfather of electronic music, Karl-Heinz Stockhausen, died at the age of 79 yesterday.

Stockhausen, who studied music, philosophy, communication sciences and german literature, was one of the most important pioneers of electronic and serial music. Though often ridiculed by blimbish and conservative babbits from the university establishment for his eccentric manners, this guy was for sure more important for the development of contempary music than most of the nerds coming from the conservatories these days.

Rest in piece Karl-Heinz, I hope you enjoy your trip back to sirius! ;-)

Radarfilm - Hinter Der Wahrheit

4 12 2007

A quick recommendation: here’s an excellent release on Kreislauf, the album “Hinter der Wahrheit” by Radarfilm. This label colleague is a very interesting tightrope walk between Ambient, IDM and Minimal and well worth a listen, so go download it.

Standing ovations for Jan Gabarek!

21 11 2007

I’ve just come home from the Jan Gabarek concert - it was stunningly perfect, definitely the best concert I’ve ever heard! What an evening!

The Laeiszhalle was sold out of course. The whole thing started laid-back, almost with a slight new age touch, soon more lenghty melodic parts dropped in and it got amazingly groovy. Long-lasting applause in the breaks and after the solos of each of the four musicians already signalized how this concert would end: minutes of standing ovations.

Besides Jan Gabarek, the group consisted of Manu Katché on drums, Rainer Brüninghaus on keyboards, and brasilian bass virtuoso Yuri Daniel. Yes, unfortunatly Eberhard Weber was not on bass, he had a stroke in April from which he hasn’t recovered yet, sadly. Get well soon!

Thanks to all four musicians for this outstanding event! I’ve always loved the music of Jan Gabarek but now I’m a real fan! :-)

Me interviewing Adam Sky

Here’s me doing a slightly drunk interview with the artist formerly known as Adamski, now Adam Sky, for a local TV show. Enjoy. ;-)

Cool little helper: Korg TM 40

22 10 2007

Though I have a software metronome and tuner in my notebook of course, I prefer playing my bass (and, guitar, if I really would regularily) through a real amp, preferably with the computer not even turned on. It’s an odd thing (or maybe a rock’n'roll thing *g*) but plugging this instrument into the laptop for practising and jamming just doesn’t feel right to me - it’s got to be just me, the amp, the instrument, and maybe a pick (well, and a cable). The only thing I really used the computer is for tuning and when I feel unsure about timing.

Last Friday during my regular visit at my favourite music stuff dealer I found the Korg TM 40 for a mere thirty euros, it’s a combined tuner and metronome, very accurate (less than +/- 1 cent), and it can even do triplets and stuff. Extremly useful, lot’s of well thought out little features - and with the label “recommend by FeldFunker” now if Korg would care. ;-)

Korg TM 40 tuner and metronome

Oh, and no, I’m not getting sponsored by Korg for writing this (though I’d love to), I just wanted praise this little helper because I’m a noble guy.
